Shower Musings on Grace

Table of Contents

When my child was young, about 18 months old, we would sometimes take showers together. As a mom it can be nearly impossible to fit grooming in and I would resort to this if need be. As we were standing there, my child wanted me to give him some soap. I would pour a small amount in his hand and instead of using it, he would joyfully slap his little chubby hands together and the soap would fall to the floor and rinse down the drain. He would then gleefully look up to me and stick out his hand and request some more.

I put a little more in his hands and the cycle would repeat over again. It was adorable and wasteful all at the same time!

I remember having this realization. That I was like God, the toddler was like me, and the soap was Grace.  God was the one giving the soap to me. The soap was useful, delightful, and a pure gift. However, like the child, I did not use it properly and it was wasted down the drain. I thought I knew how to use the gift, but I didn’t. Even when I tried to show my son how to use the soap he chose something different instead.

How often is grace being poured into our heart and lives and how often do we not even realize it and let it slip down the drain? God will not force us to use his grace, but he will keep pouring it out. He might not give you as much the next time, as I started to give my son less and less as the shower went on, but as soon as he sees that you are using the gift he will start giving you more.

How does this concept manifest in your life?

How can you choose to use God’s grace?

What moments of grace can you see from your day today?

Did you use them?
